Next, let's dive into the art of latch hooking! 🎨✂️

The Sequence for Latch Hooking:

A moss carpet requires about 50 hours of manual work. To help you get hands-on more quickly 😊, we recommend starting your latch hook carpet in the order of the table below, from simple to complex. Take it step by step, and you’ll progress smoothly!

 Type of Yarn Difficulty Image
Pom-Pom Yarn ⭐️
Coral Fleece ⭐️⭐️
Pom-pom Balls ⭐️⭐️
Milk Cotton (Requires Patience) ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Long Mohair (>7CM/2.8“) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Short Mohair (4 CM/1.6“) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Normally, it's advisable to hook the entire piece with milk cotton and mohair first and then secure the pom-pom yarn, and pom-pom balls at the end for a more polished finish. However, beginners may find it easier to start with pom-pom yarn first. This approach helps save time while a large area is already occupied by pom pom yarns, coral fleece, and pom-pom balls, the easiest and most time saving kinds. Choose the sequence based on your individual circumstances.

If you are an intermediate or an expert, feel free to start with milk cotton and mohair!

Beginners can follow the sequence of :1.Pom-pom yarn  2.Coral fleece 3.Making pom-pom balls 4.Milk cotton and mohair  5.Finish by sealing the carpet base.

Distinguish Vertical and Horizontal Thread:

Distinguish the 🌐 horizontal and vertical threads of the mesh fabric. In the diagram below, the Horizontal threads are 🪢 tightly twisted, while the vertical  threads are  looser. We need to hook all the yarn onto the Vertical(looser) threads of each grid. When we hook along this vertical line, the entire movement is the smoothest and most effortless.

For the whole project only hook on one side of the grid, don't hook on both horizontal and vertical side of the gird or the final outlook will look messy.

Work From Right to Left:

If you are right-handed, when latch hooking an area, please follow the sequence from right to left, working down one column at a time. This way, you won't easily catch the yarn that has already been processed. If you are left-handed, do the exact opposite, working from left to right.

Prepare the yarn of the specified length in the manual

  • Only Mohair and Milk Cotton needs to be prepared in this way.
  • The length of each area of the carpet is different. Only by doing so can the carpet achieve a sense of varying heights and depths. Please pay attention to preparing the yarn according to the lengths specified in the manual. The lengths marked in the diagram are for a single strand. When actually latch hooking, they are folded in half on the rug.
  • There is a SHORT CUT in section 4 How to Latch Hook with Milk Cotton/Mohair Yarn. Make sure you watch the video and choose your ideal method. You can first hook all threads continuously, creating multiple loops then cut all loops. This way you don't need to cut the threads in to sections at all.

Lets Get Started.💗

1. How to Latch Hook with Pom-Pom Yarn

You don't need to latch hook every gird for the yarn balls; as long as you achieve a piled-up effect without exposing the mesh fabric, that's sufficient.

2. How to Latch Hook with Coral Fleece/Special Hand Spun Yarn

When crocheting with coral fleece, pay attention to not leave too much space between each stitch, roughly about 2 grids. Don't pull the yarn too tight or too loose; the more you practice, the more you'll develop a sense of touch.

If your package contains special hand spun yarn, they are hooked in this way too.

2.Another SHORTCUT for Coral Fleece:

The key to the quick method is to sew every 🔢 3rd grid and to sew the entry point of the yarn to the exit point of the previous yarn, ensuring that the white 🤍 mesh fabric does not show through. Please 👀 watch the video carefully. The lawn created with this method will be thinner than one made with the latch hook method, but it will still be ✨ as neat and tidy as the latch hook and much quicker.

How to creat a flat lawn like in the picture? Do not apply too much pressure with your hand; keep it slightly loose, otherwise, it will become too tight during the pulling process, causing deformation! 🙅‍♀️💥If you hook many squares at once with a strong grip, the result will be uneven and wrinkled! 🤚🚫 Relax your grip appropriately. If you are a beginner, avoid skipping too many grids at once (since it's hard to control the pressure). Try to stick to 2 to 3 grids, and it will be much better. 👌👍

3. How to Latch Hook with Pom-Pom Balls

When making pom-poms, be sure to wrap more yarn around; the more you wrap, the fuller the pom-pom will be. After completing the pom-poms, trim the uneven lengths slightly.
Big Pom-Pom:About 150 laps using pom-pom maker
Mid Pom-Pom:About 100 laps using pom-pom maker
Small Pom-Pom:About 60 laps using pom-pom maker
While the manual provides a rough guide on colors and sizes, it doesn't specify exact color codes or sizes. Feel free to interpret the colors loosely and unleash your creativity without strict limitations.

A Handy Technique for Creating Pom-pom Balls:

Similarly, pulling together the ends of two strands and winding them simultaneously speeds up the process. The more strands you wrap, the rounder and fuller the pom-pom will appear, and when it's time to cut the strands, they are less likely to fray. This method ensures a neat and fluffy pom-pom ball for your crafting projects.

Circles marked with letters in the instructions represent pom-poms:

The circles (some marked with letters) in the instructions represent pom-pom balls in different yarns/colors. You can also randomly match the colors according to your preference. The size of circle represent the comparative size of the balls.

    4. How to Latch Hook with Milk Cotton/Mohair Yarn

Mohair and milk cotton should be latch hooked in every stitch; otherwise, the result will be very thin and lacking the plush, grassy texture.

Another Much Quicker Shortcut to Hook Milk Cotton:

A quick tip for this shortcut: when hooking, you don't have to pull tight at every stitch, instead, you can  just tug upwards a bit to tighten it after you've finished planting the area and cut it off.

    5. Adding Backing to the Carpet (Final Step)

The side of the non-slip backing fabric with black dots should face outwards, so that when it's sewn on and placed on the floor, the contact surface will be slip-resistant. When attaching the backing, tuck in the excess mesh and non-slip fabric, and try to sew as densely as possible to ensure it's tight and won't come apart.

Embrace the creative journey ahead and let the enchanting world of latch hooking unfold before you. Get ready to craft beautiful pieces and unleash your artistic flair with these step-by-step techniques. Happy hooking! 🌟🪡🧵

After watching the tutorial, you can pick an area to start working on. It's usually easier to crochet from right to left.

🧶🎨 Extra Tips for Latch Hooking Process

Are you ready to enhance your latch hooking skills? Let's address some key considerations during the hooking process:

Q: Where should beginners start when holding the materials?

    • For a quicker method and better results, consider starting with the coral fleece and unique hand-mixed yarn.
    • Using mohair and milk cotton is simpler but requires hooking grid by grid, which may take a bit longer. You can decide based on your preference for speed or precision. Additionally, it's recommended to hook from right to left in any area for a smoother experience without obstructing your view (left-handers do the opposite).
    • After everything is finished, if there is extra yarn before sealing the bottom, you can appropriately sew it in to supplement.

Q: Crafting Efficiency Tips during the Hooking Process:

    • For optimizing efficiency while using milk cotton and mohair, a handy tip is when encountering clusters of three or four mixed-color strands. For instance, if you have 2 green strands and 1 white strand, pull the ends of the green strands and combine them with the three white strands. This will naturally create tight clusters of three strands, making it easier to hook. Refer to the diagram below for visual guidance.
